Request for Donations for International Students

Dear Friends,

How is going on your summer?  I hope that you all have great time for this summer.  I am ShinHyung Seong, the new student director of Asian Center for the next academic year.  I would like to ask you to do a favor for the newly coming international students.  About 20 students will come from Asia to Garrett for the next academic year.  This is great!   But, they are going to have very tough time for their first new academic year.  So, I am thinking how Garrett community can support them effectively and warmly.  Well, I would like to ask if you can donate your stuffs which you are not using anymore.  These students will need all types of household goods: sofas, chairs, beds and bedding, other furnishings, kitchen gear, and so forth.  (Please, no clothing at this time.)  Basically, they don't have anything, so your donation will be greatly helpful.  If you have something to donate, please, let me know what you have and I will make a plan how you can give your stuffs to international students.  My phone is 917-751-1701, and email seongshil@yahoo.co.kr.  or shinhyung.seong@garrett.edu.

Thank you.   Again, have a great summer!

in peace

Moving Company Alert!
Dr. Lightsey,

I'm in the process of moving for my new appointment. It is four days before I move and the company with whom I am working has just left me without a mover. I send this to you because my hope is that other graduate will not be put in the same position with this company. I don't know how you would want to share this information; but this company is not willing to work with the United Methodist process of payment, although they didn't communicate this until now.  The company is Northland moving company.  Thanks, Jenifer

J-Term Travel Course
January Travel Course - Christianity in Rome, Italy

Hi, my name is Jim Papandrea, and I'm a new faculty member at Garrett. Many of you may know me already since I have been teaching at Garrett as an Adjunct for a while. This coming January, I am planning to take a group to Rome as a J-term class, and I'm sending this e-mail to see what kind of interest there is. Note that this course WILL fulfill the cross-cultural requirement! After you read the details below, please send me an e-mail and let me know if you're interested. This is not a commitment, only an indication of interest. I won't hold you to it, but if you think you want to go, and you might be able to go, then please let me know. E-mail me at:

Here are the details:

Dates: January 10 - 24, 2009

Cost:

$2,945, based on a minimum of 25 participants (25 is our maximum - as you can see, we need to fill the class to keep it under $3K).

$3,025, based on a minimum of 20 participants.

$3,200, based on a minimum of 15 participants.

$3,435, based on a minimum of 10 participants (this is our minimum).

Costs include:
Air fare, hotel room (double occupancy) with breakfast each day, bus & train travel, entrance tickets to sites and museums, tour guides where necessary, travel emergency insurance (medical evacuation and repatriation), gratuities.

Costs do not include:
Travel cancellation insurance (it is recommended that you get this on your own if you have a medical condition or family situation that may require you to cancel at the last minute), lunches and dinners most days (plan for additional meal expenses of about $35 per day), course tuition.

What we will see?
Everything you'd expect - all the ruins, the oldest churches, some archeological sites, catacombs, the Vatican (yes, the Sistine Chapel, too), the most important museums, etc. We will also take day trips to Pompeii and Ostia Antica (remember Augustine's Confessions?). I addition, we will have the chance to meet with the Methodists in Rome, engage in ecumenical dialogue, and possibly even meet the Methodist liaison to the Vatican. Our cross-cultural component will include learning about the contemporary church situation in Italy, including what it means to be a protestant minority in a Catholic country. At this timet, we are also planning for two free days for your own exploration.

A deposit of $500 per person would be due October 8th. The balance will be due November 10th. As you can see from the costs chart above, the more people that go, the less it costs for each, so please spread the word and talk it up. I have already been asked if non-students (spouses/partners, etc.) can go. As I understand it, the answer is a qualified yes, however they would have to register for the class and pay tuition as auditors, and I'm not sure what the rules are for that - but the bottom line is that anyone who can take the class can come on the trip. It will not be possible to come on the trip without taking the course.

Our travel agency is Seminars International. They have a great reputation, and come highly recommended by people I trust. If you would like to see the documentation from the travel agency, just let me know. If you think you might be going on this trip, start now to make sure your passport is in order. The travel agency will need appropriate documentation about two months before the trip, and your passport must be valid through six months after the trip (so, through July of 2009). Of course I'm happy to answer any questions you might have, so feel free to e-mail me with any concerns.

I'm looking forward to going back to Rome. It's been a couple years for me, and I'm getting "Romesick." Please let me know ASAP if you think there is a reasonable chance you might be coming along. Thanks!

Iowa Disaster Relief
Over half of my homestate of Iowa is currently classified as disaster area.  Devastation is still continuing and we are in desperate need of assistance.  Every single person I know has been affected by storms and floods.  I am currently finding any way I can to help, including going back in a few weeks to volunteer.

When I return to Iowa in two weeks my goal is that I will have raised $1,000 to be donated to the Red Cross for disaster relief.  With $1,000, the Red Cross can help 56 families with flood and storm clean up kits.  In my city alone, well over 3,000 homes will be affected by the recent storms.
I will also be personally delivering any food or clothing donations to local temporary shelters set up for the evacuation and storm victims.

Thank you for your prayers and support.  Jessica Duncan (jessica.duncan@garrett.edu or 319-560-5439)
